AN INCREDIBLE ARABIAN ESCAPE

It’s an incredible project, the house/fortress that has been created by Studio Ko in the middle of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. A family from Monte Carlo wanted a holiday house away from the glitz and noise of the French Riviera - they wanted a “return” to nature. The house is about 1 hour from Marrakech, isolated in the middle of fields with goats and mouton: the landscape is hard and harsh.

The house looks like an old fortress, where the material, the light and the shapes create an inner language and feeling. The architects wanted to create a project where the décor comes from the architectonic character and from the elements which have been used. It is not a minimalist house, but it is an essential one:  it’s a house that has been created to host guests.

There are 7 bedrooms and the dining room table has 20 chairs!

What I think is amazing about this house, is the capability it affords for one to sync tighter with the surrounding  landscape, by using very traditional elements with a modern yet warm ambience.

Most of the furniture is custom made in Morocco with a respect for the country’s tradition and materials.

Ko Architects are well known for creating beautiful contemporary “forms” which are a sign of our modern society, at the same time using traditional and classical techniques.

In this project, they have also highlighted the importance of water in Moroccan society, by designing big bathrooms, a natural pool, and a Haman, that all recall the tradition of purification of the body.
